It’s almost May and you know what that means…pollen. Ok, not just pollen but the Kentucky Derby! The time honored tradition will take place this year on May 2nd. The major question is are you ready? Not only will there be great hats, and beautiful horses but, oh, the mint julep!
The mint julep is a mixed alcoholic drink, consisting primarily of bourbon and fresh mint. The mint julep has been promoted by Churchill Downs in association with the Kentucky Derby since 1938. Each year almost 120,000 juleps are served at Churchill Downs over the two-day period of the Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby.
At Kentucky Derby parties across the country people will be gathering in funny hats and drinking these delicious sweet drinks. If you are lucky enough to go to a swanky party, or host one of your own, you don’t want to be seen without your very own sterling silver mint julep cup!
The Early Times Mint Julep Cocktail has been the designated “official mint julep of the Kentucky Derby.” However, the Early Times is a Kentucky whiskey, and not a bourbon. We thought we’d include our own favorite recipe. Bottoms up! (not really, these things are strong.)
